Why Mykonos?
It is a question that authors, poets, painters, and other artists have attempted to answer throughout time. In a country famous for the blue colors of the seas and the skies, the sunny days and the mild climate, its ancient treasures, and the hundreds of inhabited picturesque islands; why, indeed, Mykonos?
What is so magical about this beautiful Aegean gem that even the best tourist guides cannot find words enough to describe? Could it be the unexpected colors of the sunset over the ruins of the temple of Apollo, in the nearby island of Delos; or the singing sound of the north wind through the stone-made windmills; or the romantic small houses with the wooden blue windows that form the spectacular scenery of Little Venice neighborhood?
The answer should be an unconditional “yes, and much more” as the beauty of Mykonos is endless and waiting at every corner to be discovered! There is a beach life beyond imagination, with crystal clear waters, velvet, golden sand and the sun shining till late in afternoon. Don’t miss the cosmopolitan Psarrou beach for swimming and lounging, the family-friendly Ornos, Platys Gialos from where you can catch a water-taxi to more remote corners of the coastline, Paraga that offers a variety of bars and restaurants, Paradise where the party is always loud, the most gay-friendly Super Paradise, the secluded, quiet Agrari, the impressively long Elia or the ideal for snorkeling Lia!
Many will say that, above all, Mykonos has a notorious nightlife and a long tradition in haute gastronomy. The food is excellent, from world-renowned, awarded restaurants to small fish taverns that offer freshly cooked, delicious local recipes. As far as bars and clubs are concerned, the variety is endless and includes the world’s first beach Buddha Bar and the emblematic Remezzo that has been the jet-set’s favorite night-club since the late ’60s.
There is much more to add to the island’s attractions: the fun and pleasure of shopping in posh fashion and jewellery boutiques or small souvenir corners filled with handmade crafts that stay open until midnight. Crowded by art galleries showing the works of talented local and international designers, Mykonos is also THE place for art shopping – mostly because this rare gem of the Cycladic archipelago is itself a piece of art!
Water sports for all ages and all… stamina along with snorkeling and scuba diving adventures are also a must for the visitors of the island who are invited to discover the azure colors of the sea along with the marvelous fauna that lives in it.
The magic of Mykonos also includes fascinating museums, imposing Byzantine monasteries and small, white-washed churches on top of steep cliffs. But every time the “why Mykonos” question rises, the best answer is always one and the same: because there is no other place in the world with such mesmerizing and at the same time explosive energy!
